Author: Reekay V.

Since 2012 I’ve been traveling through various islands of the Philippines as a full-time Expat and spent 1999 living in Vietnam.

Share with me my ongoing adventures of life in the Philippines. Hopefully you find my observations helpful in your own adventures.

  2. I would like to know where I can meet up with a lot of the cool expat vloggers around the Ree-kay’s region or the province of Cebu. I know there are some in Dumaguete and Cebu City, but it always helps to know other cities where these cool guys are residing.

  3. I would try to have a few ounces of gold just in case the dollar suffers hyperinflation and goes away.

  4. Thanks god. I’m retired in Japan. I draw all money from Navy Federal Credit Union. Plus Japanese ladies are very beautiful here. My first experience in the Philippines started in February 1977.

  5. If u don’t have patience & common sense to begin with, it won’t just come find u in the Phils.

  6. You can not be single here and retire here’s why if you go to the hospital there has to be a second person to run errands like medicine pay bill’s who are you going to trust with your money. You can’t trust no one not strangers with your money and your life and the time will come when this happens good luck you’re on your own.

  7. and of course Henry which is not spoke about enough,if your westerner, expect ,except not in malls but in the markets THEY WILL AND DO CHARGE YOU AS MUCH AS 25% AND MORE,SO IF YOU HAVE A WIFE OR GF LET HER DO THE SHOPPING,,NOT JUST BUYING FOOD FROM THE MARKET,ITS GETTEING CLOTHES MENDED AND A WHOLE BUNCH OF OTHER STUFF.

  8. Smart move about investigating Thailand. I lived there many years and have long relationships with Thai people. The same rules that make you successful in the PH will work in TH. I simply never spoke about the King or politics, and I chose to always pay what I had agreed to pay (Taxi/Tuk Tuk) even if the ride wasn’t okay. I’d smile and tell them I changed my mind, then I’d get out quickly. Keep a cool head, avoid conflict, and smile a lot. Thai people will love you and your wife.

  9. Expat life is a set of skills. Spotting scams, knowing who to trust, expat dating, how to get money from one country to your target country, what to do what your process fails, how to learn about the new country, navigating landlords, and that barely scratches the surface. I am three years deep in South America and wish I had known so many things prior to coming. No regrets, but aware of skill gaps.

  10. I have $1.5M US and $2,800 per month from Social Security. Can I get by on $5k per month in BGC?

  11. As usual great and insightful video. Personally I found the most difficult thing was pondering my starting an entirely new game in a very different new place, that waking up on Christmas Eve of “how to hell did I get here and what does it mean?”

  12. Also a lack of complete information from government agencies. The sea port in Tagbilaran Bohol has no sign telling where it is on the main road

  13. Retired Working for You is by far the best Thailand page. Chris has stopped posting as much lately because he moved from Bangkok to one of the islands. But his channel is chock full of all things Thailand (not related to Pattya). He’s even got an app you can download with places of interest, food, tourist excursions, etc. He’s a chill guy with a good vibe. Check him out.

  14. I guess a good basic feature to have is an emergency escape plan, money, or tickets or something that no matter what else happens you can get home. Call it insurance or whatever. It is not a plan to fail but a plan if you do fail.

  15. It can be very easy to be attracted to the idea of something (or someone) but quickly find the reality is not a good fit and does not measure up.

  16. If you always throw monies at your problems….well Philippines will take care of that.

  17. What would you say to someone moving to ph for a year or two. 100 – 200k usd in savings? Looking to experience a different way of living than in the US. Maybe go back to the US after the year or two maybe not.

  18. Thank you for all the insight. I am planning on the move, but a few years out. Until then, I’m trying to learn as much as possible. It seems a little crazy to move somewhere without prior knowledge of what would be required. Finding a nice little place to live, and start my next adventure…
