Since 2012 I’ve been traveling through various islands of the Philippines as a full-time Expat and spent 1999 living in Vietnam.

Share with me my ongoing adventures of life in the Philippines. Hopefully you find my observations helpful in your own adventures.

  2. Looks good! No Vinegar???Looks like Vietnam is very Continental, see why you want to go back! Thanks for the video!

    1. yes! they had malt vinegar available. on the menu, they also had meat-pies, bangers-n-mash and some items i didn’t recognize but seem to be euro-favorites. the owners are very cool and great , friendly service.

  3. So when are you going back to PH. If not for the language barrier I would move and invest in Vietnam. But a foreigner in accepted more in PH than there. Enjoy your videos

    1. i love, love, love vietnam. but i will be touring the ph for a while in 2020 and then returning to vietnam later.

  4. A different company but the same name. There is a Union Jack Tavern in Festival Mall, Alabang Philippines that does English food and actually imports English food and beverages from back home. They are pricey on the imports but the food is excellent. My favorite is chicken pie mash potato and baked beans followed by apple crumble (proper) and ice cream. Although I cannot eat like I used to and that together is way to much for me now lol.

    1. @Dan P Most certainly the chickens in the U.S. are jacked up on roids. From chick to slaughter in a months time

    2. @Reekay’s LifeBeyondTheSea Only one roasted chicken?? Chickens in Asia tend to be a little small. 😉

    3. any ‘international’ foods will be about $10-$14 a plate in saigon. ‘la fiesta’ has excellent texmex food and i’ve gone there (a lot) even though it’s in that price-range. the way i look at it, every day i’m saving money having local food for $2 a meal. so, if i spend-up on some good food.. it’s worth it.

the portion may not come across on video as big, but it’s filling. (then again, some people need to eat an entire roasted chicken as a ‘serving’. so, your mileage may vary.) for me, the fish-n-chips and two cream sodas were plenty.

  5. One of my favorites; had some today, actually! When I was a very, very young Navy man and stationed in Saigon in 1970 (lived in a house on Truong Minh Ky Street that has been renamed Le Van Sy Street), I occasionally dined at Thien Nam Restaurant on the corner of Ham Nghi and Cong Ly boulevards. GREAT Chinese food (large menu that included French and Italian food, too!). Their crab meat fritters in a sweet and sour sauce, fried rice and a 33 Beer was heaven! And, apparently, the restaurant is still in business: https://www.rustycompass.com/vietnam-travel-guide-233/ho-chi-minh-city-4/eating-16/thien-nam-restaurant-saigon-1443#.XfQvbmRKhQI. I want some, now! Enjoy your videos, and am glad to see Saigon prospering.

    1. Hey John ! You will be welcome back to VN . Yes ,Thiên Nam restaurant is still in business . I am going there once in a while . The food is excellent and not too expensive

  6. I would think a Brit was involved with that place somehow… A&W Cream Soda, No way!!! Hehehe… Cod is probably shipped in, and not native to VN, that is why it is pricey.. Thanks Henry…

    1. he has some beers available, but i don’t drink much so i didn’t check out the selection.

    1. It’s British you moron so it’s fish and chips not fries, bloody Americans butcher anything of Britishness!

    2. Reekay’s LifeBeyondTheSea …..Not True!! I was there in 2018. Go to Pham Hung Noi Gai….street. Local vendor who sells fried Banana WILL sell the BEST FRENCH fried ever!! They even sell fries made from BREAD FRUIT (used in Hawaii). Best fries I had….and I live in Houston, Texas all my life! As for fried COD, you can buy that A LOT of places in Saigon! Each piece costs about 20,000 dong!! I ate many times in Saigon in 2018! It is NOT about location! I can also eat AUTHENTIC Indian food in Saigon! Hell, I can find all sort of INTERNATIONAL food in Vietnam for FRACTION of the price

    3. when i get Pho in vietnam, it’s about $1.20usd. i just had Pho two days ago here in California… $14.

it’s all about the location. where else in saigon is a person going to find authentic fish’n’chips for under $3? not gonna happen.

  7. Fish & chips washed down with creme soda? LOL ‘Merican! From the listing you gave of other menu items, it’s definitely a UK/Aussie/ NZ/US/Canadian comfort food establishment, for curing foreign culture overload & homesickness. Think I’d stick to beer & slide down those stairs on the way out, though!

Well, I’m sold; HCMC/Saigon appears to have it all! Any quaint country towns with apartment/house rentals within 30-45 minutes drive? Maybe, with some beach?

Perhaps, a video on costs of MRIs – if they have such – broken limb repairs (typical foreign scooter mishaps), dental implants, and other medical costs? Local insurance programs?

  8. Wow , fish and chips in Saigon .? Looks pretty good to me and plenty big enough . Price is ok too, similar to here most places in Uk . Hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing as always.

  9. “I’m not crazy about seafood?” That’s funny, I have a Filipino cousin that says the same thing. It’s hard to stay away from seafood in SEA.

I visit Baja California a few times a year for their seafood. They have great seafood soups, fish tacos, ceviche, lobster, oysters, clams, fish, prepared Mexican style. With all the fresh salsa, rice, beans and tortillas. Mexican’s in Baja California eat 10x more seafood than the people in the U.S.

  10. Holy CRAP….that is very EXPENSIVE! You can get that plate and a drink here in Houston, Texas for $6.99. They give you so much more fries…and some HUSH PUPPIES & COLESLAW included!! Reekay, you DO KNOW you can buy French fries for 10,000 dong for a big portion throughout Saigon. As for battered fried Cod fish, that is very easy to buy in Saigon!! A plate like that costs me 40,000 dong (instead of 240,000 dong)!!!!

Vietnamese people know that is why they charge you 5-6 times more…..

  12. I hope that you are in good health.

As a suggestion it would be nice if one
day you could do an educational video for all the expats to see about
the importance of knowing about the potential health risks caused by
    (STD’S).

It would also be very important to know
the clinics in the Philippines where one could get medical treatment,
as well as the costs about the latter.

    Thank you.

  13. Looks great ….cod should be one big one as opposed to two small ones though …..in the UK though , it’s obligatory to have mushy peas on the side ! …

  14. I have to agree with most……….small portions, sounds way too expensive. But hey, it looks good!
