  1. I can really relate to #1 and #2. I’m now married to Filipina for 20 years now and both are still true. Anyway, I’m very impressed by the amount of content you have on your site in such a short time. Looking forward to following this site and your adventures in the future. FYI, I’m near Chicago, 7 months away from retiring and probably a year away from living in a southern Cebu province. Stan

    1. That is awesome. And since you already have your wife, you’re all set! I’ll probably find myself in Cebu permanently with a place in Bohol to ‘get away’ to. I love both places. 🙂

      1. That sounds like the way to go. It doesn’t really surprise me to hear that you are missing Cebu/Mactan/Lapu Lapu. You seemed to be pretty happy there & there would be more to do. But, OTOH, being able to get away to Bohol would be nice for a break & I know you really like it there. Why NOT have the bost of both worlds if you can afford it (I suppose thats the hard part).

        1. I was just in Cebu/Mactan last week and it was nice walking those streets of Basak again, seeing a few people I’ve come to trust. But after all the noise and clamor of the ‘big city’.. it sure felt nice to get back here to the jungle again. Peaceful, green and lots of clean air. 🙂

  2. you forgot about the 2 or 3 kids that live with mama she had from a previous relationship with her Filipino boyfriend.

  3. The Philippines is a wonderful place to live, you can live very cheap or not so cheap depending on your creature comforts and what foods you require from your home of origin. Imported foods are expensive but you can get just about anything you want here.

  4. Right on Bob perhaps we will see an increase of retirees from U S in places like Cebu or dumaguete Let's open a food franchise or a fitness gym in dumaguete? or consider?

  5. I have a friend from Arizona now living in South Carolina wanting to open a South Western BBQ in Dumaguete, he's moving over here in a couple of months.

  6. Hi Henry gosh you are real quick to pick up on certain traits of the Filipina Woman,so how does this sit with re-marrying again ?will you convert to the fact its hard finding a perfect Woman and take the plunge with your new fellow country Woman after finding your special someone? ,or do you honestly think the culture gap is to far to attain and unrealistic to make things gel for a enduring stress free ,happy logical and progressive relationship and marriage?just to let you know everything that you have described in this article is true to some extent cause Ive been married to a Filipina for 6 years now so what I’m saying Henry is, i feel you .

  7. Haha, #2 is apparently spot on. I’m coming to visit a Filipina friend in January and she told me she couldn’t swim…that blew me away! That’s like a Canadian not knowing how to ice-skate!

  8. Nice list but #6 is a big miss. Typically you need to court a Filipina to get her sweet "yes" which is a sign that she has a feeling for you. That does't mean you can get her to bed. A typical Filipina values chastity and only gives herself after a marriage. I am a Filipino and have never heard any story like #6 unless that Filipina is joking around, out of her mind or an innocent little girl.

    1. I would agree with you that it is probably that way for Filipinas when being courted by a fellow Filipino. My consistent experience as a Foreigner, however (and that of most Foreigners) is that we are hearing, “I love you!” within a week of first meeting them. And that’s not just some bar-girl blowing smoke.. that’s many ‘Good Girl’ Filipinas. Ask any Foreigner and he will tell you that several Filipinas have said they are “in love” by the 2nd or 3rd date.. with no courting involved at all.

  10. Henry, I would take that with a grain of salt…I find it hard hard to believe especially for a modest Filipina to fall in love by 2nd or 3rd date to a man they just met and hardly know. However, I might say that there is a very small chance that your theory is correct but in most likelihood these women are not actually in love at all for the reason they are the ones who only know. Now if these women have some kind of correspondence with the foreigner then it is possible that they have already developed some feeling for the latter.

    1. On that premise, everything we hear should be taken with a grain of salt. Especially considering the context of this little piece is a tongue-in-cheek piece, not a documentary. But what I can tell you is that, in my own experience, I have had it happen too many times for it to be coincidence.. that a Filipina is baiting me with ending her texts or phone calls with, “I love you!”. And it’s been only a few days! As I mentioned, maybe they don’t act that way with Filipino men, but as an Expat that has been my experience and that of others as well.

  11. Hi Henry,,

I really laugh out loud with all your Philippine adventures. Especially the piggy and cow stories. I am Filipina by the way. Its very informative interesting and it makes me laugh. Keep it up.we went to Bohol last year in Alona beach and Mactan in Cebu and also at Mango Square.

  12. I love your website. I especially love your adventures-to be able to see the real beauty of nature and life beyond the city lights and materialistic things. It's becoming more apparent to me that there more people in this world that appreciates the "real" beauty in people and life. Nature gives us a sense of calmness and peace and sometimes we forget that………….that city lights and and all the excitement is what all there is.

    1. I only enjoy the city for a few days.. my preference is here in the province where I can enjoy the green nature around me. It’s much less stressful, a simpler way of life but still with the luxuries I need daily. 🙂

  13. After watching some of your stuff on YouTube I looked for your website thanks Im liking your stuff keep it up !

  14. LMAO she will not do that to a Filipino man. I love you at the end of calls and tex it raised a RED FLAG. Bad girls is all over the world not just my country but in the USA they don’t say I love you at the end of tex and calls especially I’m in love with you in just 3dates. Disparate lol

  15. Well I am about to leave my son and daughters place, in sunny Naples Florida where it is currently 78 degree's. I will be arriving in New York on Monday December 23rd to spend the holiday's with my daughter where it is currently 15 degree's. February 10th I am leaving for the Philippines to be with my fiancé and family. I will keep you up to date and start writing after I settle in. Thank you for your articles and keep up the good work.

  16. why are there so many young unwed mothers an the fathers are gone an dont take care of the kids or then get married an when she get with baby you guys haul ass ,an they cant get divorced/annulled an the sorry man goes an lives with another lady ,then the other is stuck ,an hope that the foreigner has the time an money to help her get it , if u get a lady with baby man up an take care of it or get fixed

  17. Henry your Ten Ways… list really had me laughing, especially the living on an island and not knowing how to swim and the dressing for the beach one. We currently live in AZ and my Asawa doesn’t “dress” to hide from the sun quite as extreme as she did a couple years ago.

  18. I also lived in Cebu, and married one from there, you know you married a filipina when you ask a question and she answers by raising her eye brows…..This still throws me off….they answer by their eye brows and even points to objects with their lips…………this stll gets me.

I also lived in cebu.. and will be returning to Cebu and Thailand to make the compare.

  19. You are a very interesting man. Excellent writing about your phl experiences. I also found my bliss 6 years ago immediately bought a house in Caloocan, which has doubled in price since. Also we bought a 27 acre farm at Asturias , 30 sow piggery , 6 cows , 6 goats a multitude of native chickens. 51 mango trees & 120 bananna trees. We built a 2 bedroom house and a bunkhouse for the workers. We also have 1200 coconut trees and built a oven , now cooking copra. I have more friends in the Philippiens than friends in Canada. Every day is amazing there and you are right they are a wonderful society of people. I have been doing the 6 month thing back and forth , but I retire Dec 2015 , no more Canadian winters for me. Thanks for all your doing Henry. Regards Neil Bliss

  20. Hi Henry, your website is a world of information & I can’t thank you enough. Your advice about the Philippines really helped me out a lot on my first trip there this Christmas. I met up with a lady Friend that her cousin is married to a buddy of mine & we had a great time. I started out in Cebu City then made my way to Leyte Island because that’s were she’s from…then after I jumped over to Bilaran Island & finally made my way back to Cebu. I stayed for about three weeks all together. I’m employed as a Civil servant and work for the City of N.Y. and I’m retiring in five yrs. at the age of 57. My question is were would be a nice geographical location be to move in between Cebu or Leyte Island that isn’t to rural or to busy like Cebu City…
but kind of like in between. I would sure love to snow bird it there in the Winter Months and see how I really like it fist & weigh out my options . What I really like is the bang for the US dollars &
if a US pension works here in the States>>>Hmmmmm…then you know the rest. Keep up the good work
Henry…i really love your site. You seem really cool and a knock around guy at that. Also, I hope everything works out for you in the Philippines as well. Next time I visit I would like to meet you in person… Dinner and drinks are on me. Henry, thanks for all your advice and hard word in helping people such as myself.

    Stay well & God bless…Dom***
