Yep. I’m retiring from California to Washington State. Article is incorrect Tennessee does not have the highest sales tax. There are counties in California with 11% sales tax.
I switched to a non-income tax (for me) country, Thailand, and told the California Franchise Tax Board to f-off when they wrote to me about not filing state income tax returns!
Question what if just want to live in Philippines with out a residency in the United States and you never plan on coming back to USA . How does that work ? If you understand my question
Arkansas is trying to reduce/get rid of state income tax. For visiting US once a year, I am looking at moving closer to a city with international flights, It costs a lot to fly from here to LA or Dallas. Flight costs would be more of a factor than state income tax.
I have never considered this as part of planning an overseas move. Thanks for compiling this information.

Spend the night in South Dakota and fly to the Philippines the next day.
You have to know that financial instituitons require a “real home” address. Many will not accept addresses known to be a mail forwarding address. South Dakota has a 1 day residency rule. Stay there long enough to get your drivers license transferred to S. Dakota then exit the state. Good state for RVers and other nomads.

Does anyone from TX know whether I can convert my current DL to TX DL online? I’m in Philippines now. Worst case I will just let my DL expire. Thank you

Hell I’ve done this in my working career, I’m 37 and over the road truck driver, I’m never home or barely ever home so I switched to a state with no income tax over the working course of my career that’s going to equate to two to $400,000 in taxes I never have to pay.

Question. When you let the state of California know that you are out of the state more than eleven months of the year, does that mean you don’t have to pay California taxes but you still have to file?
From California to Texas. Best decision I’ve ever made. Although my firm is still in SoCal, I pay far less taxes.
I set up a domicile in the state of Washington specifically for the reasons you described. California was chasing me for back taxes to the tune of 10’s of thousands of dollars because I filed federal taxes using my parents California address, out of convenience. All of my earned income was from the state of Mississippi and I paid state tax to Mississippi. I got it resolved this past June, but California is chasing every dollar they can find.
